Foil Container Lids: Types and Sealing Options Explained
There are four main types of lid for aluminium foil containers: card lids, which are crimped onto wrinklewall containers for takeaway and catering; rPET clip-on lids, which snap onto smoothwall trays and give a clear view of the food; heat-sealed lidding film, which creates an airtight seal for ready meals and chilled retail products; and foil lids, used to cover large trays such as gastronorm containers. The right choice depends on the tray type, the edge profile, how the food will be stored and whether it needs to be sealed for shelf life.
This guide explains how each lid type works, which trays it suits and how to choose the right closure for your product.
Why the lid matters as much as the tray
The lid does more than keep food covered. It controls how long the product stays fresh, whether it can be stacked, how it looks on shelf or at the counter and whether it can go straight into an oven. A tray and lid that do not match properly lead to leaks, contamination risks and wasted packaging, so the two should always be specified together.
1. Card lids
Card lids are flat boards, usually with a foil or coated facing on the food side, that sit inside the rim of a container. The rim of the tray is then folded or crimped over the edge of the lid to hold it in place, either by hand or with a lid press.
Card lids are the standard closure for wrinklewall foil containers, including numbered takeaway containers such as the No 2 container. They are quick to apply, low cost and easy to write on, which is why takeaways and caterers often mark the contents on the top.
- Best for: takeaway, food-to-go, catering and home-delivery meals.
- Advantages: low cost, fast to apply, writeable surface, good heat retention.
- Limitations: not airtight, so not suited to long shelf-life retail products.
2. rPET clip-on lids
Clip-on lids are rigid clear lids made from recycled PET that press onto the rim of a tray. They give customers a full view of the food, which makes them popular for chilled display, deli counters and grab-and-go retail.
At Sai Alupack, rPET clip-on lids are available for smoothwall foil trays, whose firm, consistent rim gives a secure fit. Because the lid is plastic, it must be removed before the tray goes into an oven.
- Best for: retail display, deli, chilled food-to-go and cold or reheat-at-home meals.
- Advantages: clear visibility, reclosable, strong presentation, stackable.
- Limitations: not ovenable, and not a hermetic seal.
3. Heat-sealed lidding film
Lidding film is a thin plastic film that is heat sealed around the rim of a tray using a tray sealing machine. It creates an airtight closure, which makes it the standard choice for retail ready meals and other products that need an extended shelf life. Sealed trays can also be used with modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), where the air inside the pack is replaced with a protective gas mix before sealing.
Film sealing needs a tray with a smooth, flat flange. That is why it is used with smoothwall trays, particularly those with a reversed rolled edge, which gives a firm sealing surface. Our guide to foil tray edge types explains how each edge profile affects sealing. Sai Alupack can supply suitable lidding film for its smoothwall trays.
- Best for: retail ready meals, chilled and frozen meals, and food manufacturing lines.
- Advantages: airtight and tamper-evident, supports MAP and extended shelf life, high-speed automated sealing.
- Limitations: needs sealing equipment and smoothwall trays; some films must be pierced or removed before cooking.

4. Foil lids
Foil lids are pressed from aluminium and sit over the top of a matching tray. They are most common on large containers used in catering, where the whole tray goes into an oven or hot cupboard. The full size gastro lid fits our full size gastronorm trays, making it suitable for batch cooking, buffets and events.
- Best for: catering, batch cooking, buffets and outdoor events.
- Advantages: fully ovenable, retains heat, robust and fully recyclable with the tray.
- Limitations: no visibility of the contents, and not airtight.
How to choose the right lid for your foil container
Work through these questions to find the right closure:
- Is the tray smoothwall or wrinklewall? Card lids suit wrinklewall containers; clip-on lids and lidding film need smoothwall trays. If you are unsure which you need, read our comparison of smoothwall and wrinklewall foil containers.
- Does the product need a shelf life? If it will sit in a chiller or freezer for days or weeks, heat-sealed film is usually the only suitable option.
- Will it go into the oven with the lid on? Choose a foil lid, or remove card lids, clip-on lids and film according to the product instructions.
- Does the customer need to see the food? For retail display, a clear clip-on lid or transparent film works best.
- What equipment do you have? Film sealing needs a tray sealer, while card lids can be applied by hand or with a simple lid press.
Quick reference: which lid for which use?
- Takeaway and food-to-go: wrinklewall container with a card lid.
- Deli and chilled display: smoothwall tray with an rPET clip-on lid.
- Retail ready meals: smoothwall tray with heat-sealed lidding film.
- Catering and buffets: gastronorm tray with a foil lid.
For high-volume users such as food wholesalers, standardising on a small number of tray and lid combinations simplifies ordering and storage.
Lids and recyclability
Aluminium trays are widely recyclable, but lids are often made from different materials. Foil lids can be recycled with the tray, while card lids, clip-on lids and film should be separated before the tray is rinsed and recycled. Clear on-pack disposal guidance helps customers recycle correctly. Read more in our guide to recyclable foil trays.
Frequently asked questions
What types of lids are available for foil containers?
The main types are card lids, rPET clip-on lids, heat-sealed lidding film and foil lids. Card lids suit wrinklewall containers, while clip-on lids and lidding film are used with smoothwall trays.
Can you put a foil container in the oven with the lid on?
Only if the lid is made of foil. Card lids, plastic clip-on lids and most lidding films should be removed or pierced according to the product’s cooking instructions.
Can foil trays be heat sealed?
Yes. Smoothwall foil trays with a suitable flange, such as a reversed rolled edge, can be heat sealed with lidding film on a tray sealing machine.
Are foil container lids recyclable?
Foil lids can be recycled with the tray. Card, plastic and film lids are made from different materials, so they should be removed before the tray is recycled.
